Race and the Crisis of American Democracy

Panel Discussion with Nigel Hatton (University of California, Merced) - Luvena Kopp (University of Tübingen) - Heike Raphael-Hernandez (University of Würzburg) - Thomas Chatterton Williams (Author, Contributor to The New York Times) - Moderator: Catrin Gersdorf (University of Würzburg)

Crisis is the catchword of our current political moment. Phenomena such as the rise of nationalism and populism in partnership with racism and isolationism, the political turmoil and disregard for governmental professionalism associated with the Trump administration, the eruption of violence among opposing political camps, and the general populist disregard for a culture of debate can all be read as symptoms of a crisis that goes beyond attacks on specific democratic institutions. The real threat would seem to be to the yet more radical sense of democracy as a "cultural way of being" proposed by scholar activist Cornel West. Against the backdrop of this broad understanding of the democratic, the panel will apply its expertise to analyzing the current state of democratic institutions in the United States, but also consider the uses (and limitations) of analyzing democracy and crisis within national frameworks.
