Panel Discussion: "Africa and Beyond: Finding the Power in More Than One Story"

08.07.2019

Discussion with Writer in Residence Yaa Gyasi, Yogita Goyal of the University of California Los Angeles, Barbara Sponholz of the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Mutiat Titilope Oladejo of the University of Ibadan, and Julien Bobineau of the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg.

Stories have power: to name and shape realities, to move and motivate, but also to elide and simplify.  Such power, as the writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has compellingly argued, involves not just the ability to tell a story, but to make that story the definitive one about a person or a place. This panel discussion aims to discuss these dynamics as well as take on the challenge of conceiving Africa, African, and Black global experience beyond the single reductive story.
