Discover Ireland in the EFL Classroom – Virtual Exchange with Limerick
18.09.2026Take part in a Virtual Exchange with students from the University of Limerick and explore Ireland through direct contact with Irish students. The course is open both to students taking it as part of their Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) studies and to other students who would like to earn 3 ECTS in the Freier Bereich.

The course combines a Virtual Exchange with students from the University of Limerick with work on cultural topics, film and digital media. Participants work in German-English tandems and complete three collaborative projects between October and November.
Together with your partner, you will create a multimodal presentation or video on student life, produce a bilingual podcast based on the films Brooklyn and Almanya – Willkommen in Deutschland, and complete a cross-cultural sustainability review. The projects provide opportunities to discuss cultural perspectives with your partner and to work together in different digital formats.
The seminar can be taken either as a regular TEFL course (5 ECTS) or for the Freier Bereich (3 ECTS). In the TEFL course, the Virtual Exchange is examined from a language teaching perspective, with a particular focus on intercultural exchange, Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), and the use of digital media and film in the EFL classroom. The Freier Bereich option is open to all students, including those who are not studying to become teachers. It involves the three collaborative Virtual Exchange tasks and a final reflection; no e-portfolio is required.
The course is organised as an intensive block seminar to accommodate the earlier semester schedule at the University of Limerick. Following the online kick-off on October 1, 2026, at 8:00 PM via Zoom, the seminar sessions take place on Fridays from October 9 to November 27, 10:00 AM–2:00 PM, in Room 01.026 (Building 70, Annex). The final session on November 27 ends at 12:00 PM. The collaborative Virtual Exchange phase ends on November 30, 2026.
Much of the tandem work is organised independently with your partner and can be scheduled flexibly. Students taking the course for the Freier Bereich attend selected joint sessions, particularly those connected with the films and the collaborative tasks.
