Irish writer Helen Cullen joins us to discuss her second novel, The Truth Must Dazzle Gradually, which was published in translation in Germany as Der Riss, durch den das Licht eindringt. Described as “a compassionate portrayal of grief” by the Irish Times and “a book of rare quality” by the iPaper, the novel has achieved great critical acclaim. Helen will share insights into the inspiration for the novel and its representation of a changing Ireland, motherhood and the search of personal truth.

Helen Cullen is an Irish writer and academic living in England. Her debut novel, The Lost Letters of William Woolf, was published in 2018 by Penguin Random House in the UK and Ireland, published in the USA by Harper Collins in 2019 and in translation to numerous foreign markets. Described as “Enchanting, intriguing, deeply moving” by the Irish Times, the novel garnered Helen a Best Newcomer nomination at the 2018 Irish Book Awards. Her second novel, The Truth Must Dazzle Gradually followed in 2021. Helen holds a B.A. Communications, M.A. Theatre Studies and M.A. in English Literature and is currently completing a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at the University of East Anglia while working as a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Brunel University, London. Helen is also as a literary critic for the Irish Times newspaper and writes for the Sunday Times Magazine in the UK.
