Writing Matters: Intensivworkshop Creative Writing

03.07.2019

The Writer in Residence Program of the Schreibzentrum | Writing Center offers JMU students the opportunity to interact with and learn from professional writers. This summer term, the American guest lecturer Matthew Nelson-Teutsch will be directing a workshop on creative writing in conjunction with the residency of the novelist Yaa Gyasi. Students will be introduced to a range of literary styles and conventions. Together, the course will explore tools and techniques essential for effective creative writing, which can also be powerful resources for academic and professional writing. Students will be able to hone their own writing skills by way of practical exercises, completing a writing portfolio (ca. 10 pages) by the conclusion of the course. Students in the creative writing workshop will be expected to attend Yaa Gyasi’s public reading, and will be included in a special coffee hour with the Writer in Residence during Friday’s session.
