The English Drama Group presents "God of Carnage" by Yasmina Reza

12.01.2015

January 21st, 22nd & 23rd January at 8 p.m. Stadtmensa

After the success of last year’s production of Diana Son’s Stop Kiss and last semester’s production of Malfi (an immersive theatrical version of Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi), the English Drama Group at the University of Würzburg is proud to announce that this semester we are staging a production of:

God of Carnage, by Yasmina Reza

During a playground altercation about gang membership between Henry Novak and Benjamin Raleigh, both eleven, Benjamin knocks out two of Henry’s teeth. As a result, two sets of Brooklyn parents come together for a meeting to resolve the matter: Alan Raleigh, an executive shark-type lawyer and his frustrated and nausea-prone wife Annette face Veronica Novak, the ever-so-hospitable champion of mannerism and social justice, and her husband Michael, self-made wholesaler and Hamster Enemy No 1.

At first diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters.

Or as the New York Times puts it: “God of Carnage, […] a shifting ballet of emotions […], definitely delivers the cathartic release of watching other people’s marriages go boom. A study in the tension between civilized surface and savage instinct […]”
