Primary and secondary school (Grundschule = primary school & Gymnasium = grammar school [Reuchlin Gymnasium]) in Ingolstadt 1952-1965.

Student (undergraduate and postgraduate) at the University of Munich (LMU) 1967-1975; subjects: English, Latin, Medieval Latin, German; for several years student helper for Prof. Suerbaum (Latin philology); two longer stays in England, namely:

· German assistant teacher at two grammar schools in Bolton/Lancashire 1969/70 (County Grammar School and Smithhills Grammar School);

Grant by the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft = German Research Foundation) in order to complete the Habilitation (postdoctoral thesis).

· Full professor at the Technical University of Dresden (chair of English language and linguistics), 1993-1997 (four years).
· Full professor at the University of Munich (chair of English language and medieval English literature), 1997-2012 (fifteen years; i.e. 29 years altogether at LMU).
· Professor at the WSZMiJOK = Wyzsza Szkola Zarzadzania Marketingowego i Jezykow Obcych w Katowicach [Silesian College for business, marketing and languages, or Gallus] in Katowice / Poland, 2007 – 2015 (eight years).
· Senior professor at the University of Würzburg (Wuerzburg), 2012-2014, and visiting professor there 2014-2016 (i.e. four years so far; altogether eight years at Würzburg).
· A contract with the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan / Poland for June, July and August 2015 to teach as an expert in the programme supported by the European Union “UAM – ponadnarodowe i interdyscyplinarne rozwiązaia XXI wieku”; see also E. below.

· Visiting lecturer or visiting professor at the universities of Eichstätt / Germany (1979/80 and 1985/86); Innsbruck / Austria (1988 and 2004); Lodz / Poland (several times since 1991, especially in the 1990s and 2000s); Palermo / Italy (1994); Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio / USA (1995); Venice International University (VIU) / Italy (March 1999 and September 2011); Masaryk University at Brno / Czech Republic (an annual or biennial compact seminar for doctoral students since 2000; eleven visits so far; see also section D. (4) below).
· Visited and worked at the “Dictionary of Old English Project” in Toronto / Canada for a month in August 1982.
· External member of the branch committee (oborová komise) for doctoral dissertations in the field of English language at the Masaryk University at Brno / Czech Republic since 2005; see also section E (4) below.
· Appointments at the University of Malaya (Kuala Lumpur / Malaysia):
· (a) External examiner for the undergraduate programme (bachelor) in language and linguistics (English) for the academic sessions 2010-2013.

Teaching and examining
· Academic teaching since 1976, i.e. 39 years of academic teaching. More than 120 different courses: lectures, introductory courses, seminars (for beginners, for advanced students, for graduate and doctoral students, for examination candidates, etc.), many of them repeatedly, some just once, in the area of English language and linguistics, including synchronic as well as historical linguistics and history of English, Medieval English literature and English culture (culture of English-speaking countries).
· Also many co-taught seminars with colleagues from English literature as well as from other philologies and areas (French, German, Indo-European, Italian, Religion & Philosophy, Scandinavian).
· Examiner for a very large number of written and oral examinations: intermediate examination, state examination [Staatsexamen], B.A., M.A., diploma [Diplom-handelslehrer], doctoral degree (Dr. phil. = Ph.D.), postdoctoral degree [Habilitation], etc.
· Many teaching visits and guest lectures at other universities as well as papers and plenary lectures at international conferences; see section E. below.

Exchange programmes and invitation of guest lecturers
Organiser of numerous international exchange programmes from 1990 to 2012, especially under the auspicies of Tempus, Erasmus, and Socrates. Organisation of student and staff exchanges. Altogether about 30 exchange programmes, most of them running for a long period. Also excursions with groups of students (to: Southern England; Caen/France; Belmont University in Nashville/TN).
Invitation of numerous guest professors, guest lecturers, & visiting scholars from 1990 to 2015, e. g., via the Tempus, Erasmus, & Socrates programmes, the Fulbright Program, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH), the Euro-Scholar Program, the ZMR [Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies] in Munich, the budget of the chair, etc.
Involvement in academic administration and self-government
E.g., head of the English & American Department in Dresden 1993/94, in Munich 1998/99 & 2002/03; member of the departmental council in Würzburg (Wuerzburg), Dresden, and Munich 1989-2011 (i.e. for 22 years altogether), and of the faculty council of the faculty of languages and literatures in Dresden 1993-1997, in Munich 1997-2011 (i.e. for 18 years altogether); dean of studies in the faculty of languages and literatures of Munich University (LMU) from 2007 to 2011 (i.e. for four years); member of numerous committees, e.g. for the appointment of new professors, and for the distribution of study fees; also external member of committees at other universities, e.g. for appointing professors, for the habilitation of foreign colleagues or their promotion to professorship or full professorship.
Participation in interdisciplinary programmes
At the University of Munich (LMU), participation in:
a) Since 2000: The interdisciplinary Medieval and Renaissance Studies Programme (originally called Projektforum Mittelalter; since 2008 called Zentrum für Mittelalter- und Renaissancestudien [= ZMR; i.e. Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies]);
b) Since 2002: Graduate School Language and Literature Munich, Class of Language (originally called Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programme in Linguistics [LIPP, i.e. Linguistisches Internationales Promotionsprogramm]);
c) For both of these programmes:
- supervisor of doctoral students, organisation of and participation in many lecture
series, seminars, colloquies, summer schools etc., especially between 2000 & 2011;
- edited the calendar of lectures and seminars etc. on Medieval & Renaissance topics
from 2001 to 2011 (i.e. for ten years).
- member of the executive committee of ZMR 2008 - 2011.
Other services for the scholarly community
For membership of editorial boards, see B.6 above. Also, regular reviewer of articles submitted for publication in various national and international journals and collective volumes, and reviewer of grant applications for various national and international agencies, e.g. for the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
Collaboration with educational institutions outside the university (extramural activities)
Collaboration with secondary schools: Between 2000 and 2013 several talks to advanced
pupils at grammar schools in Bavaria (e.g. about Shakespeare’s language, English Advertising Language, The Bayeux Tapestry etc.), especially at the Kurt-Huber-Gymnasium in Gräfelfing (near Munich) and the Descartes-Gymnasium in Neuburg/Danube.
Adult education: Lectures at the Volkshochschule (‘community college’) in Munich and at the
Würzburg Open University in Ochsenfurt and Schweinfurt (2014 & 2015).
Organization of a manuscript exhibition at the Bavarian State Library, Munich, on the
occasion of the ISAS conference 2005.
Honours and awards
· Honorary Member of ISAS (International Society of Anglo-Saxonists) since 2011.
