What is the additional qualification in 'Translation and Language Comparison'?
The additional qualification in 'Translation and Language Comparison' can be obtained by all students at the Institute of Modern Languages (i.e. by BA, MA, PhD, and teacher training students). It offers students of English/American Studies, Romance Studies, and Slavic Studies the opportunity to acquire translation skills for the language(s) they are studying beyond their regular degree programme.
What is the aim of the additional qualification?
International networking has made intercultural communication a central aspect of society, science, and the economy. Studying a modern foreign language already provides students with skills that are becoming increasingly important when working in this field. Inaddition to that, the qualification in 'Translation and Language Comparison' includes the theoretical basics of translation. Furthermore, knowledge from cultural studies and about the structural differences between the source and target languages are deepened and applied to translate different types of texts, including technical and literary translations. Students can demonstrate this knowledge with the help of the qualification, thereby improving their application profile.
How can the qualification be obtained?
To successfully complete the additional qualification, the modules listed below have to be completed. For some courses in Modules 2 and 3 (marked with an asterisk in the course list below), the successful completion of Module 1 is a prerequisite. Otherwise, the modules do not have to be completed in a specific order and there is no maximum number of semesters to complete the qualification.
The successfully completed courses are documented by the signature of the respectice lecturers on the 'control sheet'.

This module teaches the theoretical foundations of translation from a literary and linguistic perspective across different languages. An e-learning course is offered for this purpose, which is completed through self-study and concludes with an exam. (Dates for the exam are not fixed and agreed upon individually).
In this module, you will attend an (advanced) translation course from your own subject area. Please note that this course must be completed in addition to the compulsory programme of the regular degree programme. If no additional translation courses (e.g. technical translations or literary translations) are offered, you may retake a course from the regular degree programme. Translation courses taken abroad can also be credited.
The seminar has to conclude with a written assignment (term paper, portfolio, project work) that deals specifically with the areas of translation or language comparison. Possible topics include work on contrastive linguistics, translation analyses and comparisons, or literary translations with a commentary on translation techniques. The crediting of the additional qualification should be agreed upon with the lecturer in advance. Upon successful completion of the seminar, you will receive the corresponding ECTS credits for your regular studies in your own department as well as a signed confirmation that you have completed Module 3 of the additional qualification.
This module offers diverse options for gaining practical experience in the field of translation, intercultural communication, or language comparison, e.g. through workshops, lectures, and internships. The programme coordinator decides on credit eligibility. Current information on workshops or lectures is announced via the mailing list.
