Additional qualification 'Digital Competence in the Humanities'
What is the additional qualification 'Digital Competence in the Humanities'?
The additional qualification 'Digital Competence in the Humanities' can be acquired by all students of the Faculty of Arts (i.e. by BA, MA, PhD, and teacher training students). It is a joint project of the Institute of Modern Languages, German Studies and Digital Humanities in cooperation with the Centre for Philology and Digitality 'Kallimachos' (ZPD), which was established to offer students of the humanities the opportunity to acquire skills in the use of digital methods and data beyond their specific fields of study.
What is the aim of the additional qualification?
Confident use of computers has become indispensable at the workplace and is often a prerequisite for employment. Digitalisation is also gaining ground in the humanities, whether in the creation and use of digital editions in literary studies, digital databases and corpora in linguistics, or the digitalisation of teaching. However, it is often not clear to future employers to what extent a degree in the humanities can contribute to the development of these skills. As part of the programme, students gain confidence in using digital methods and data, as well as the ability to critically reflect on the benefits and areas of application of digitisation. They can demonstrate this knowledge with the help of the qualification, thereby improving their application profile.
How can the qualification be obtained?
To successfully complete the additional qualification, the modules listed below have to be completed. For some courses in Modules 2 and 3 (marked with an asterisk in the course list below), the successful completion of Module 1 is a prerequisite. Otherwise, the modules do not have to be completed in a specific order and there is no maximum number of semesters to complete the qualification.
The successfully completed courses are documented by the signature of the respectice lecturers on the 'control sheet'.
Further information
Current courses that can be taken as part of the programme in the individual modules can be found in the course list.
Current information and short-term changes to the course programme will be announced by email. Please subscribe to the mailing list for this purpose.
In this module, the lecture 'Digital Humanities im Überblick' is attended (Course no. 04063500, registration by email to Prof. Dr Fotis Jannidis). Please note that it is only offered in the winter semester.
In this module, students take a seminar from another subject area with a digital focus. Seminars offered in this module can be found in the current course list. Courses offered by the Digital Humanities (such as text encoding or data modelling) require the successful completion of Module 1.
The seminar must conclude with a written assignment (term paper, portfolio, project work) with a digital focus/component. The aim is to apply the knowledge acquired in the other modules in your own work. The crediting of the additional qualification should be agreed upon with the lecturer in advance. Upon successful completion of the seminar, you will receive the corresponding ECTS credits for your regular studies in your own department as well as a signed confirmation that you have completed Module 3 of the additional qualification.
This module offers diverse options for gaining or deepening practical experience:
- Two workshops offered by the ZPD
- Two courses offered by the Rechenzentrum (excluding courses on Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- One workshop at the ZPD and one course at Rechenzentrum
- One programming course (ZPD or Digital Humanities)
- An internship at the ZPD or in a project run by the departments participating in the programme
- Four-week internship at the University of Cork, Ireland, in cooperation with the CELT (Corpus of Free Electronic Text: The Free Digital Humanities Resource for Irish History Literature and Politics) and Irish Studies Würzburg (ISWÜ)
Courses from the practical module can be taken at any time. There are no further requirements to be met, exception the internship in Ireland, which requires the prior completion of Module 1.
