Additional qualification "Digital competence in the humanities"

What is the additional qualification "Digital Competence in the Humanities"?

The additional qualification "Digital Competence in the Humanities" can be obtained by all students of Modern Philology (i.e. Bachelor's, teacher training, Master's and doctoral students). It is a joint project of the Modern Philology, German Studies, Digital Humanities and other Institutes of the Faculty and the Centre for Philology and Digitality "Kallimachos " (ZPD), which was launched to offer students of Modern Philology the opportunity to acquire and demonstrate skills in dealing with digital data beyond their studies.

What is the qualification good for?

Confident use of computers has become an integral part of the world of work and is often a prerequisite for employment. Digitisation is also gaining ground in the humanities, whether in terms of the creation and use of digital editions in literary studies, digital databases and corpora in linguistics or the digitisation of teaching. For future employers, however, it is often not clear to what extent a humanities degree programme can contribute to the development of these skills. As part of the programme, students acquire both confidence in dealing with digital data and the ability to reflect on the benefits and areas of application of digitalisation. They can demonstrate this knowledge with the help of the qualification and thus improve their job application profile.

What do I have to do to obtain the qualification?

In order to obtain the qualification, the modules listed below must be attended and successfully completed. For some seminars from modules 2 and 3, module 1 must first be successfully completed. These seminars are labelled accordingly in the course list below. The order and timing of courses from the practical module can generally be chosen by the student.

It should also be noted that courses cannot generally be subsequently credited towards the additional qualification. Only internships in projects of the participating subjects can be credited retrospectively in consultation with the project leader and the programme coordinator.

The certificates are acquired in the course of the degree programme; there is no limit to the number of semesters. Your achievements are documented on a"routing slip" signed by the respective lecturer.

Module overview

In this module, you can either attend the lecture "Digital Humanities at a glance" (course no. 04063500, registration by email to Prof. Dr Fotis Jannidis) or the lecture "Introduction to Computer Science for students of all faculties" (course no. 08190100, registration via WueStudy). Please note that both courses are only offered every winter semester.

In this module, you will attend a seminar from another subject area with a digital focus. Possible seminars can be found in the current course list. From the field of Digital Humanities, you can attend a course on text coding or data modelling; the prerequisite for this is the previous attendance and successful completion of Module 1.

The seminar must be completed with a written assignment (term paper, portfolio, project work) with a digital focus. The aim is to apply the knowledge acquired in the other modules in your own work. Discuss your wish to have the seminar recognised for the additional qualification with the respective lecturer. Upon successful completion of the seminar, you will receive the corresponding ECTS credits for your regular studies in your own subject area as well as a signed confirmation that you have completed the work required to obtain the certificate.

In this module, you can choose between various opportunities to gain practical experience:

  • two workshops offered by the ZPD
  • two courses offered by the computer centre (excluding courses on Word, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • one workshop at the ZPD and one course at the computer centre
  • one programming course (ZPD or Digital Humanities)
  • an internship lasting several weeks at the ZPD or in a project of the subjects involved in the qualification
  • a four-week internship at the University of Cork, Ireland, in co-operation with CELT (Corpus of Free Electronic Text: The Free Digital Humanities Resource for Irish History Literature and Politics) and Irish Studies Würzburg (ISWÜ)

Courses from the practical module can be taken at any time. You do not have to fulfil any further requirements. An exception to this is the internship in Ireland, for which at least Module 1 must be successfully completed.
