English linguistics at IAWE26
30.07.2025The team of English linguistics presented five talks at this year’s conference of the International Association for World Englishes (IAWE26) which took place in Gießen (Germany) on 25-27 July 2025 and was themed “World Englishes through Space and Time”. Carolin Biewer talked about her research in the South Pacific addressing “Societal Changes, Individual Biographies and the Structural Features of Cook Islands English: Research on Rarotonga Ten Years on” and presented a paper on Geolingual Studies entitled “Around the World on New Year’s Eve in 2021: Urban Discourses on Twitter (X)”. Ninja Schulz and Lisa Lehnen gave a talk on “Exploring Local Themes and Global Connectedness in Social Media Discourse from London and Edinburgh”. Aditya Upadhyaya and Carina Stick presented work in progress on Hong Kong English from their PhD projects talking about “Tracing the Dynamics of Degree Adverbs in Hong Kong English Newspaper Discourse: A Study on Genre Development and Nativization” and “Politeness in Hong Kong Business Correspondence: Investigating Genre Development and Nativization Processes from a Diachronic Perspective”, respectively.
